Mobile Devices on Poor Wireless
We received a phone call from a school who had rolled out an iPad Initiative to all their students a year earlier, but for some reason the wireless never seemed to cooperate. Students complained that the wireless was slow, that they would be dropped at times and that they couldn't participate in online activities like poll voting as a class.
We looked at how their wireless was deployed, which was basically a home router in every other classroom. There were several problems with this design:
#1 – They were using home routers, which couldn't handle the number of students connecting to them and were each handing out their own IP addresses and leases.
#2 – Each router had no idea of the other routers around it and were broadcasting on the same wireless channels, causing massive interference.
#3 – The routers they installed were sitting on desks, which were constantly being tampered with by mischievous students.
We came in and identified all these problems virtually instantly. We were able to solve the wireless channel interference issue very quickly and eventually helped them move to a permanent wireless model by hanging access points from the ceiling that could handle the load, as well as keeping them out of the reach of students.
