Hacked iPads
A couple of years back we received a call from a school that had students breaking the rules on their iPad policies. The school had set policies in place on how the students were to utilize the devices and had also setup restrictions on the iPads so that the students couldn't break the rules even if they wanted to. Yet they noticed kids who had downloaded games and created customizations to the iPads that should have been disabled.
This issue was a new challenge to us, but one we embraced with confidence as something we could solve. After much research and testing, we were able to determine that while the iPad's restrictions were working, the iPad could be plugged into any computer and wiped back to factory settings, allowing the students full control of the devices at that time. The solution was simple, a single check box that had been overlooked by the teacher who deployed the iPads the summer prior. Furthermore, we were able to detect several other settings that were leaving the devices vulnerable to the students, creating a much more secure and comprehensive design to all future iPad deployments at the school.
